Soil Surveys
NRCS is responsible for all soil survey
activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). A soil
survey is a reference book. It depicts a scientific inventory of all
soils in a particular geographic area, usually a county, and lists
each soil's potential and limitation. Information about each type of
soil is provided in sufficient detail to meet the needs of farmers,
agricultural technicians, community planners, builders, engineers,
scientists and students.
NRCS employs soil scientists who survey the land and collect data
which is then published as a soil survey and distributed to soil
survey users throughout the nation. Soil surveys on nonfederal lands
are carried out cooperatively with state agricultural experiment
stations and other agencies.
