Small Watershed Program

NRCS provides technical and financial assistance in cooperation with local sponsoring organizations, state agencies and others for watershed-based projects. This NRCS program empowers local people and builds partnerships. It also requires contributions from local and state funders.  NRCS cooperates on projects for watershed protection; flood prevention; water quality improvements; soil erosion reduction; rural, municipal and industrial water supply; irrigation water management; sedimentation control; fish and wildlife habitat enhancement and wetland restorations.

After a watershed plan is approved, technical and financial assistance can be provided for the installation or for improvements specified in the plan. NRCS provides assistance to the project sponsors. For structural projects, surveys and investigations are made and detailed designs, specifications and engineering cost estimates are prepared. Land rights, easements and rights-of-way are delineated so the project sponsor can secure them. NRCS also provides technical assistance to landowners on the individual land units, to help accelerate the planning and application of essential conservation practices.
