One of my goals as State Conservationist is to increase the capacity of the conservation partnership in Massachusetts. I see many opportunities for NRCS to collaborate with groups like the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Districts, Farm Bureau, agricultural commissions, conservation commissions, the Grange and state agencies to leverage resources in pursuit of our common concern: the Commonwealth’s natural resources.

Curtis ElkeCurtis Elke joins NRCS Massachusetts as ASTC for Operations

NRCS Massachusetts is pleased to welcome Curtis Elke as Assistant State Conservationist for Operations. Curt, a native the small town of Cavalier, North Dakota, comes to Massachusetts by way of Oklahoma where he served as District Conservationist and Civil Rights Representative for four years.

State and federal partners combine resources to meet demand for conservation planning on Massachusetts farms

(October 5, 2007) – Due to increasing demand for conservation planning assistance on Massachusetts farms, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) have agreed to contribute additional federal and state resources to accelerate delivery of conservation technical assistance.

Chinese officials witness the power of partnerships in Southeastern Mass.

$400,000 in federal and state funds awarded to launch Massachusetts Farm Energy Program

AMHERST, Mass. (August 30, 2007) – Some $400,000 in federal and state funding will soon help Massachusetts farmers with energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts. A Massachusetts Farm Energy Program will be developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR).

Wildlife habitat restoration work begins at Rock Meadow, Belmont

Tractor clearing invasive plants.BELMONT, Mass. (August 10, 2007) -- Work to clear invasive species and restore 30 acres of grassland habitat at the Rock Meadow conservation area in Belmont began this week. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is providing $51,855 in federal cost-share assistance to the Town of Belmont over 10 years.
