Early sign-up for conservation programs in Massachusetts

NRCS is announcing an early sign-up period for federal conservation cost-share programs to help Massachusetts farmers address natural resource concerns on their land next year. Bay State farmers must apply for 2006 NRCS conservation programs by October 31, 2005.

Conservation Security Program recognizes 11 Massachusetts farmers as conservation stewards

Eleven Massachusetts farms in Berkshire and Essex counties will be will be rewarded for their conservation stewardship through the new federal Conservation Security Program (CSP), administered by NRCS. The annual contract payments, which will total nearly $100,000 statewide over five years, are designed to reward producers for historic conservation activities on agricultural lands and to provide enhancement payments for producers who agree to implement additional conservation measures.

Web Soil Survey: Internet-based system allows users access to soil survey information

Massachusetts farmers, conservationists, engineering firms, and city planners now have quick and easy access to national soils information. NRCS has launched the Web Soil Survey website, which will provide secure public access to soils data that contributes to every aspect of public and private land use and development.

Farmers invited to attend grass-based dairy beef tour, Westport

Beef cattle grazing on pastureFarmers interested in learning about grazing beef cattle are invited to attend a free tour of River Rock Farm in Westport, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 15. The tour is designed for grazing enthusiasts and skeptics alike who would like to know more about raising beef on pasture for a premium market.

New District Conservationist to serve Berkshire County farmers

NRCS has named Kate Parsons as the new District Conservationist in charge of the NRCS field office in Pittsfield. Parsons replaces Bruce Philbrick who served in that office for eight years until his retirement in July.

USDA provides nearly $469,000 for disaster recovery in Deerfield

NRCS has announced that $468,750 in Emergency Watershed Protection Program (EWP) funding will be available to the town of Deerfield for damage caused by an April 2005 rain and snow storm. The funding will cover riverbank stabilization on the Deerfield River that will protect the waste treatment facility serving 123,000 residents and businesses in the Village of Old Deerfield, including Historic Deerfield, the Deerfield Academy, Bement School, Eaglebrook School, and Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association.
